dónde están y cómo llegar

Nestled in the heart of the Axarquía region in the province of Málaga, lies an authentic historical and cultural treasure, Los Baños de Vilo. This natural spa, free and open to the public, is renowned for its thermal waters which have been appreciated since Roman times for their supposed curative and rejuvenating properties.

Situated near the municipality of Periana, the baths are home to waters rich in beneficial minerals such as sulphur, magnesium, and calcium. The waters, which maintain a constant temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, have been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions and other ailments. This made Los Baños de Vilo a prominent place for health and wellness over the years.

From Roman Baths to Modern Spa

The history of the baths dates back to Roman times when public baths were an essential part of daily life. The Romans built elaborate facilities around these thermal springs, firmly believing in their therapeutic properties. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Los Baños de Vilo gained widespread popularity, attracting notable personalities of the time like General Narváez.

In 1828, a building with rooms and a bathhouse was constructed next to the main pool. However, disputes over ownership led to the deterioration of the facilities. It was not until the late 19th century when Emilio de San Martín, the owner at the time, undertook significant improvements. Unfortunately, a storm in 1907 caused severe damage to the facility.

The rejuvenation of the baths began in the early 1990s when the Periana City Council acquired the spa and started restoration works with touristic purposes in mind. Today, only an immersion pool remains, but it is perfectly integrated into the natural environment, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by forests and mountains.
